北海道の某所に計画したホテル。駅前のロータリーからほど近い街の中心に位置している。交通の利便性は高いものの、敷地が線路と大通りに挟まれており北海道ならではの大自然との接続が感じられない敷地だった。そこで、駅前のロータリーや駅前広場を含めた一連の敷地を「森」と見立てて、林立する木々の中で過ごせるようなホテルを計画した。 林業に「長伐期施業」という手法がある。一般的には40年ほどの伐期の針葉樹を2倍の80年～120年まで育成させ、大径材として出荷する方法だ。そうすることで、出荷時期を調整しつつ生産者に高付加価値を生み出す。また林に間隔が生まれるので下層の植生を発達させ、生物多様化して天然林に近くなる。その時の樹間が約５ｍ、直径が500㎜ほどになるのだが、本計画ではそのスケールをそのまま応用して木の構造フレームを構成している。 日本に広がる針葉樹林を抽象化し、ホテルという形で地方都市の駅前に「森」を移築した。なんでもない駅前の一角に森が再生され、その足元にホテルという多様な生物の営みを内包する居場所が生まれることを目指した。多雪地域の冬季においても、室内で森を感じながら自然と繋がるひと時を過ごして欲しい。

This project is a hotel planned for a site in Hokkaido, located in the heart of a town just off the rotary in front of the train station. While the site is highly convenient in terms of transportation, it is wedged between railway tracks and a major road, offering little sense of connection to Hokkaido’s defining natural landscapes. To address this, the design reimagines the station rotary and plaza as part of a larger “forest,” envisioning a hotel where guests can feel as though they are spending time among a stand of trees.

The project draws inspiration from forestry practices, specifically the method of long rotation silviculture. Unlike the common 40 year cycle for conifer harvests, this approach extends the growth period to 80–120 years, producing larger diameter timber with greater added value for foresters. The increased spacing also allows undergrowth to develop, enhancing biodiversity and creating conditions closer to a natural forest. At maturity, these trees stand roughly 5 meters apart with diameters of about 500 mm, a scale directly applied to the structural timber frame of the hotel.

By abstracting the coniferous forests that stretch across Japan, the design effectively “relocates” a forest to the station front of a regional city in the form of a hotel. In this otherwise ordinary urban setting, the forest is reborn, and at its base a hotel provides a place that, like a diverse ecosystem, nurtures various forms of life. Even in the snowy winters of Hokkaido, guests are invited to experience moments of connection with nature while surrounded by the atmosphere of the forest indoors.
