東京有楽町マルイの1階にあるPARK MARCHE（パークマルシェ）に小さなおスイーツショップを設計した。 駅前のマルイメインエントランスを入るとすぐ正面に現れる場所に、東大寺の金剛力士像のように入口の左右に位置しているスタンドカウンター。2つは別の店舗とはいえ共に設計できるのであれば、対の関係性をつくれないかと考えた。 ORIENTAL BLUEはパートドフリュイ、フィナンシェ、ブレンドティーのギフトスイーツのお店。発泡スチロールの廃材を型に入れて溶かしブロック状にしたリサイクル材を煉瓦のように積み上げた。鮮やかな青や白はもともとの発泡スチロールの色であり、100%化学製品であるにも関わらず、形も色も不均一な天然素材のように曖昧な風合いのカウンターになっている。大航海時代に混ざり合ったシノワズリのように、逞しくも美しいコロニアル文化を表現している。 pleine by KITASANDO COFFEEはカフェで人気のお菓子、サークロ（円形クロワッサン）をスイーツにした新店舗。木の廃材をプレスした薄い波型合板をカウンターに使用した。天然木の年輪模様と波型形状が重なり、モワレのような柔らかな表情をつくっている。 双方ともに共通して廃材を利用した材料を使用しており、既製品には無い生き物のような不規則性をもつ。発泡スチロールという石油製品も、数億年前の生物の死骸から生じた化石燃料であるとことを考えると、人の手を通じて新たな年輪を刻むようなものだろうか。

This project involved the design of a small sweets shop inside PARK MARCHE on the first floor of Yurakucho Marui, Tokyo. Located directly opposite the station front main entrance, the shop stands to the left of the entryway, paired with another counter to the right. Though the two are separate tenants, designing both offered the opportunity to create a sense of symmetry, like the guardian statues (Kongōrikishi) at Tōdai-ji’s Great Gate.

ORIENTAL BLUE is a gift sweets shop offering pâte de fruits, financiers, and blended teas. Its counter was built by stacking blocks of recycled material made from melted waste styrofoam, cast into molds. The vivid blues and whites are the original colors of the styrofoam, and while it is 100% synthetic, the uneven tones and forms give the surface an ambiguous quality reminiscent of natural materials. The design references the bold yet graceful colonial cultures of the Age of Exploration, blending influences like a form of chinoiserie.

Pleine by KITASANDO COFFEE is a new sweets shop based on the café’s popular “circle croissant” (sacuro). Its counter uses thin, corrugated plywood made from pressed timber offcuts. The overlapping grain patterns of the natural wood and the wave like geometry create a soft, moiré like expression.

Though distinct, both shops share a common theme of using recycled materials. Each counter embodies irregularities akin to living organisms qualities absent in mass produced products. Even styrofoam, a petroleum based material, originates from the fossilized remains of life from hundreds of millions of years ago; here, through human hands, it takes on new “growth rings” in the form of design.
