I designed Choshi’s first incubation facility in front of the Choshi train station.
Initially, it was just a bare shell—without even insulation. However, as a facility intended to support Choshi’s new urban development, I wanted to harness that empty, open space to generate a sense of anticipation for what was to come.
First, by grouping the plumbing fixtures on the left side upon entering the entrance, we were able to compactly organize and streamline the water supply and drainage piping routes. Next, we utilized the necessary floor level differences required for those piping routes to divide the space diagonally into a dirt-floor area and a finished-floor area. The area near the entrance features a dirt-floor finish and is designed to be open, allowing people to enter casually from outside. In contrast, the floor area features a lower ceiling height to facilitate focused work, and pendant lighting is used to define distinct zones, creating a calm and inviting space. Additionally, during events, people can sit on the stairs connecting the two areas, transforming the entire floor into a theater-like space as they gather around the monitor. By connecting these two areas—which differ in level and materials—into a single open space via a large diagonal staircase, the design enables the coexistence of distinct zones for daily use and the expansive space required for events.
In addition, a brass-colored sheet of iron is suspended as a pendant light. The 1.6-millimeter-thick sheet of iron is left in its raw state, with as little processing as possible, simply suspended in mid-air. This abrupt, detail-free materiality exudes a presence that transcends its scale. Precisely because it is a material that is nothing in particular, it evokes a sly sense of comfort, as if it were effortlessly transcending the boundaries of architecture, interior design, and even product design.
